Bill: Hi I’m Bill Hobin, President and CEO of StorQuest self storage.
I’m here today with Justin Klosky, founder of the O.C.D. experience, professional organizer for StorQuest Self-Storage.
Justin is here today to provide helpful tips on how to maximize office space with revenue producing people, not files.
Commercial Office Space
Justin: Commercial office space can be expensive.
Consider using a self-storage unit to store anything like supplies, inventory samples and, of course, paperwork.
When packing and storing your items, you’re going to need to think about how frequently you’ll be using them.
Inventory
Take inventory of all the items going into your storage unit.
This is the perfect time to make that master list. With proper preparation and organization, you’re going be able to fit a lot more in your storage unit than you may think.
Storage Manager
Designate someone in your office to be the Storage Manager.
This is the person that will update the master list and be in charge of any items going in and out of the storage unit.
Climate Control Units
If you’ll have items such as trade show booths, pharmaceutical samples, computers, or any technology equipment, you’re going to want to make sure you look into a climate controlled unit.
Climate-controlled units are kept between 55 and 80 degrees with central AC and heat.
Storage Insurance Policy
If you’re storing valuables in your unit, you want to look into a higher insurance policy for your items.
StorQuest has a relationship with a Bader Company. See your Storage Manager for details on pricing and plans.
Additional Protection
Although self storage units are intended to protect your items from the outside elements, you should take additional steps to protect your items as well.
Computer Storage
Computers should go into individual boxes with packing peanuts or some other type of insulation.
Cables should not look like this (tangled up). Instead, you’re going to want to organize all of your cables individually so when you’re looking for them, they’re easy to find
Document Storage
Archived documents should be placed in airtight, clear bins for extra protection.
Office Furniture
Cover office furniture with blankets or drop cloths and make sure to stand them up vertically to save space.
Easy Access
Lastly, you’re going to want to organize all the items in your storage unit for easy access.
You don’t want to be moving things all around your storage unit to get in and out. Breakdown less frequently used items such as heavier, bulkier furniture, and store them in the back up your unit.
Organization is Key
- Keep like items together, such as office chairs and documents.
- Stacking like-size boxes to keep your unit organized is always a wise idea.
- Pack computer equipment in individual boxes and add packing peanuts for extra safety and insulation.
Focus On What Matters
By following these tips and working with a Self Storage Manager you’ll be able to maximize your time to focus on what really matters – your business.
